Free range kids! Why a local holiday in Arundel delivered a surprisingly ...
When I told my family we were going for a short break in a holiday cottage somewhere on the English south coast, they weren't expecting to end up literally 40 minutes’ drive from where we live.
But spending two days in the historic nearby town of Arundel turned out to be one of the most relaxing weekend breaks we've had as a family.
One look at our Sussex cottage on the Holiday Lettings website revealed we would be in a ‘home from home.’ We brought our bikes of course, and a football, and our faithful four-legged friend as the place was also 'pet friendly', but apart from that we only packed enough food and clothes for a couple of days.
Around 40 per cent of Brits are looking at holidaying in the UK rather than abroad this year, according to recent research, and Holiday Lettings says it has seen a huge rise in the number of enquiries for UK lets. If the properties on its books are all as fine as this cottage, I can see why.
Arundel, with its majestic castle and handsome town centre , is a place I’d driven through countless times on the way to somewhere else. Now, here we were staying within walking distance, in a cottage in the pretty hamlet of Warningcamp - named literally as it used to be a camp for warning people about approaching baddies in medieval times.
The cottage itself was bright, clean and welcoming. The owners of this former gatehouse had left a basket in the kitchen with a loaf of fresh bread, eggs from their own chickens, milk, teabags and luxury biscuits to keep the wolf from the door in the event we’d forgotten such essentials - a nice touch, particularly for those arriving late.
A well-stocked kitchen, complete with dishwasher, meant easy catering for the family. The children rushed around upstairs, bagsying and unbagsying rooms and beds while I wandered around the massive garden, marvelling at the utter peace. Our dog Lolita was in heaven, with fields all around and the tantalising flash of rabbit tails in the hedgerows keeping her busy.
Before retiring, we snuggled up on the huge sofas to watch one of the many DVDs provided on a huge flatscreen TV, a rare treat for us.
The calm and space of the countryside is something that still strikes me, a confirmed ‘townie’, every time I visit. In Warningcamp the only sound other than the distant rattle of the London to Arundel train was birdsong and the faint hum of bees going about their unhurried business.

Came out Tuesday. I helped produce it. The five-song release is free, and I’d recommend it to fans of Freelance Whales, Beirut, Guster and/or the banjo.
Thanks in advance for giving the tunes a listen! I’m pretty proud of the project, and hope you’ll enjoy it. Feel free to leave feedback in the comments or send it to indieclauses@gmail.com. Thanks for being a part of Independent Clauses over the last octade; it’s been a fun, fascinating and sometimes fretful ride, but I love it. Here’s to eight more!
