Cars 2 Races To The Top Of The Box Office
Do you know what you get when releases a criticial savaged sequel to an extremely toyetic kids movie from a beloved movie studio? A $68 million opening weekend. Pixar’s Cars 2, opened at the top of this weeks box office to the surprise of absolutely no one. The film, which follows the adventures of slick anthropomorphic race car Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and his buddy the folksy pickup truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy), is the lowest ranking Pixar release on movie review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes which is quite a change from the usual rapturous reception given to the animation giant’s releases. Most reviews cite an unusually simplistic plot and odd focus on the shallow, catch-phrase friendly Mater character at the expense of the rest of the film’s cast.
Nobody bats a thousand and Pixar was long overdue for a strikeout. It was almost a silly to expect this film to be up to the studio’s usual high quality given that its production was brought about not because of the resounding success of the first Cars or because the Cars universe was so much rather than any of their creations but because Disney made more than five billion off of licensed Cars merchandise. While a major studio producing an inferior sequel to much loved film isn’t unheard of, - and Cars 2 did out open it predecessor by a cool $8 million - one wonders what happened to the Pixar that cancelled a slap together version of Toy Story 3 because they feared brand dilution. Clearly the promise of a few billion dollars during a recession reminded all involved that exactly what kind of business they are in. This week’s only other new wide release, Jake Kasdan’s Bad Teacher opened to a very solid $31 million. The raunchy comedy, which follows Cameron Diaz’s misanthropic middle school teacher on her quest in landing a wealthy husband, out preformed the similarly themed Bridesmaids in its first week. The film should provide a real shot in the arm for Diaz’s career after the less than stellar performance of Knight & Day and The Green Hornet. Excluding K&D’s opening, the film is Diaz’s strongest non-animated opener since 2000's Charlie Angels and her biggest opening comedy ever.
