Steyr Col. Jeff Cooper's Signature Gray Scout Rifle

TRUSSVILLE, Alabama - -( Ammoland.com )- Due to overwhelming customer demand, Steyr Arms is now offering its legendary Scout rifle with the original gray stock.

Reintroduced at the 2010 NRA Annual Meetings as part of the limited Jeff Cooper Scout Commemorative Package, the gray-stocked Scout sparked a renaissance in Lt. Col. Jeff Cooper’s all-purpose scout-rifle concept that redefined the “one man operating alone” and their increasingly burdensome array of accessories waning, common sense has seemingly returned to the American rifleman, as the Colonel’s lightweight, .308 caliber bolt rabbits to elk, bug-out Steyr Scout rifle has overshadowed his early sales figures.

It became so popular in the last 13 months that another company made an attempt to imitate for Colonel Cooper. Sincerely Steyr welcomes another horse race, the fact that Colonel Cooper still stands associated with a single company where he sought to create a production scout rifle. This company was Steyr Mannlicher, and light, fast and accurate rifle that led, after nearly a decade of collaboration between Steyr and Colonel Cooper was the Steyr Scout.

The gray-stocked Steyr Scout may well have been ahead of its time during its introduction in 1998. Several low-powered, long-eye-relief scopes are still available today, but the market is now teeming with one-power reflex sights that can be forward-mounted to provide the user with accurate fire and the ability to operate with both eyes open in order to immediately detect flanking dangers.Backup "ghost-ring" then something occurred, but Steyr Colonel prescription filled from a different direction with the incorporation of a review system with two newly designed positions which allowed the rifle to be fed separately with the magazine of five rounds in a lowered position. The magazine could be seated further with a minimum pressure, allowing the bolt to feed cartridges directly from the magazine. The magazine becomes recessed Steyr Scout, which is a feature that can be found on all current-production Steyr rifles with a double-stack detachable box magazine. An optional high-capacity magazine adaptor and 10-round magazines are also available for the Scout.

Steyr engineers knew that to build an optics-topped Scout rifle that weighed in at less than seven pounds —as Col. Cooper required— they would need to employ a polymer stock, but Steyr engineers surprised Cooper while taking the rifle to a new level when they showed him a bipod that was seamlessly integrated to the stock. An opening for a second box magazine was also designed within the buttstock to keep a backup five- or 10-round magazine held in ready reserve, flush along the bottom of the stock. Were also fully integrated push-in five-and-turn to lock the points in the stock sling swivels to facilitate the addition of Cooper favored Ching Sling. This sling allows the shooter to lock themselves in the rifle much in the same way as the sling loop allows the Marines to his beloved Corps to become one of their guns to successfully engage targets at distances of 500 meters and beyond.

1903 Rear Sight Sleeve Question

I have been checking the forums for an answer to a question I have about the rear sight sleeve on a 1903 Springfield. I understand the process for replacing the barrel on one of these, but how does one go about taking the rear sight sleeve off the old barrel and reinstalling it on the new barrel? I have read about the placement of a locator pin that runs parallel to the barrel, but I have heard a couple of versions regarding how this pin is replaced. One version is that after the sleeve is located and placed on the barrel a blind hole is drilled between the two and the pin tapped in place. Can anyone shed some light on this process for me and what is the best way of removing and reinstalling this sleeve and is it indexed somehow to line up the front and rear sight? Thanks a lot for any help on this matter.......Rick H. Thanks Tom for the response. A friend of mine had a new barrel put on his 03, but for whatever reason the person doing the work didn't take the barrel/rear sight sleeve off the old barrel and install it on the new one. I suppose this would be all well and good as he is mounting a scope on it, but there is no where for the handguard to tuck into without the sleeve on the barrel. Anyway, after looking at the barrel sleeve I was trying to determine how to remove the sleeve from the old barrel and index it for proper sight alignment. Apparently the pins are supposed to take care of this, at least from the books I have. The issue I am having difficulty understanding is with the installation of the pin that runs parallel with the barrel located near the back of the barrel at roughly 1 o'clock. I have heard and read that there should be "notches" cast or machined into the barrel and sleeve that line up for pin installation, but another person states that a blind hole was drilled after the barrel and sleeve are mated together. I would think that would be a pretty difficult hole to drill based on its location and the fact you would be drilling through the edges of two different types of steel at the same time. Worse yet I would think would be trying to drill through a "notch" in the barrel if using the old barrel sleeve that has an existing notch in it. Any information would be appreciated.Removing the FRSB is also a challenge. They often get boogered! Penetrating oil can help. Maybe the heat, perhaps frozen? I heard a heavy gloved hand to hold the base of the nose while driving in a block of soft wood.
