Heavy rain possible this afternoon in western valley
A severe thunderstorm warning was posted this afternoon for parts of Henderson and the south Las Vegas Valley.
The National Weather Service said radar indicated a severe storm capable of producing penny-size hail and winds in excess of 60 mph. The warning was in effect until 3:15 p.m. and included Green Valley, Anthem, Seven Hills, Silverado Ranch and Southern Highlands.
The weather service said the Seven Hills area received 0.35 inches of rain during a 30-minute span in the 2 p.m. hour.
Storms brought brief rain to the Summerlin area early Friday afternoon. Other storms popped up in the southwest valley.
Forecasters said heavy rain was possible again today across the Las Vegas Valley as storms developed in the Spring Mountains and southern Clark County.
A flash flood warning was posted for south-central Clark County as storms dumped heavy rain west of Searchlight. Rural areas near Cal-Nev-Ari and U.S. 95 from Searchlight south to the state line were in the line of storms, according to the National Weather Service.
The storm is capable of producing heavy rain and ponding of water on roadways, forecasters said.
The high temperature is expected to reach 98 degrees this afternoon in Las Vegas with a 30 percent chance of rain.
Personally, I'm enjoying the break from the ordinarily intense heat. Hope nobody gets hurt by flooding or lightning, this weather has been a boon. Sure, humidity is up a bit, but as I age, I the humid air on the skin instead of the usual arid dry sauna we have in the summer. Lower temperatures, no laser death rays nuking my skin just to get from my car to inside a store... and GORGEOUS, DRAMATIC skylines. Say what you will about Las Vegas -- we have some incredible surrounding mountains, sunrises and sunsets. The sunset yesterday put the spectacular clouds in the sky into otherworldly relief.
