NORWAY — Natalie Reed and her daughter, Julieanne L. Reed, both of Mexico, currently have a show of their creations — braided rugs and paintings — in the windows of Norway Savings Bank Operations Center on Main Street.
Natalie, of Backkingdom Braids, has been creating braided rugs for 50 years. She crafts each rug from new wool fabric and each one is unique. She enjoys creating heirloom quality pieces that will be used and loved for generations.
Natalie has taught rug braiding in the Mexico area for almost as long as she has been making them. Through teaching at Mexico, Rumford and Dixfield night-school programs and offering classes at The Mexico Congregational Church, Natalie has taught the art to hundreds of people in Western Maine and in Fort Myers, Fla.
Natalie has a good selection of rugs in a range of size and color. Custom orders are welcome.
Julieanne, of Waking Wing-ed Dreams, works with the seen and unseen worlds of nature and imagination. With a strong focus on winged creatures, fox, turtle, salamander and other animals weave their way into the works and add to the layers of story. This most recent work is done in Sennelier oil pastel on rag paper.
Julieanne studied painting and color at the Portland School of Art. After 20 years away from painting, she returned to her work as an artist. She paints the birds and other animals as they 'show up' and leaves the storytelling to the viewer — with the belief that we each bring our own story to the images we see. Julieanne's studio is in Mexico. She has high-quality giclee prints available in various sizes.

Originally, the braided rugs were made by early American colonists, who plaited and sewn by hand, often out of old wool clothing blankets, wool and other materials that were no longer useful. Today, handmade wool rugs woven are largely a thing of the past, the process has been automated by a machine in 1910.
Today, most braided wool rugs, you will find are made by machine, in one of two styles. The first is a round braid rug, in which a braided outer shell encloses material such as foam rubber in the middle. The drawback to this style of braided rug is that they aren’t as durable as the traditional, flat braid design, because the material in the middle of the “robe” braid often breaks down quickly. When this happens, the rug loses it’s shape and starts falling apart. So going back to choosing a rug for a high traffic area, you’ll want to avoid round braid rugs, and instead look for flat braid rugs.
Flat braid rugs are made with strips of wool fabric or other wool material that are woven into long, flat braids, with the long strips of braids then being wound into a rug and stitched together. This style of Braided Wool Rugs is the ideal choice for high traffic areas, because they are incredibly durable and can withstand years of use (and abuse). In addition, the wool that they are made of keeps water from penetrating, which makes cleanup of spills, wet footprints, etc very easy. Plus, wool is mildew, mold and fungal resistant, and has enough elasticity to help keep the rug in it’s original shape for years. So in the case of a high traffic area, braided wool rugs are one of the “best” options you can choose.
