JCC, homebuilder are close to deal on 58 acres

CREVE COEUR • The Jewish Community Center is selling 58 acres — more than half of the property at its I.E. Millstone campus — to Pulte Homes for construction of up to 164 houses.
The center is selling the land for $4.35 million. Both parties hope to close on the sale in the fall, with construction expected to begin shortly thereafter.
The wooded, undeveloped land lies in the northwestern corner of the JCC's campus along Schuetz Road, west of Lindbergh Boulevard. It's in an unincorporated part of St. Louis County tucked between Creve Coeur and Maryland Heights.
The entrance to the subdivision would be through an access road at the far west of the JCC property, off of Schuetz.
Some of the land is now used for the JCC's softball fields. Those will be replaced with larger, lighted softball fields that are due to be completed by next spring on another part of the JCC property, said Lynn Wittels, president and CEO of the JCC.
Wittels said the JCC had been able to invest extensively in renovations and new facilities because of the sale as well as many donations.
"The sale is part of a strategic plan that has provided for the reinvigoration and rebirth of the Jewish Community Center," she said.
Pulte has approval from St. Louis County to build 164 houses and has submitted a preliminary plan for 160, said Gail Choate, land use manager for St. Louis County.
Choate said the plans were under review and that the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District would review storm water drainage plans. Some creeks run through the property, and a part of a lake straddles the property and a subdivision to the south.
Jacque Petroulakis, corporate communications spokesman for the Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-based PulteGroup, said the company plans a mix of two-story and ranch-style houses designed for young families. The development will feature neighborhood common areas.
