3 VI JROTC teams compete in cadet leadership challenge Virgin Islands winners
Junior ROTC teams from the U.S. Virgin Islands dominated the training scene at Camp Islands Venture 2011, the annual Summer Cadet Leadership Challenge held at the Lake Guajataka Boys Scout Camp in San Sebastian, P.R., from June 22 to 26.
The annual leadership challenge camp, held specifically for Army JROTC Battalions of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, is one of several camps in the region sponsored and funded by U.S. Army Cadet Command, and more specifically, the 6th JROTC Brigade, which has training oversight for the south eastern states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The annual Camp is also supported by the Army National Guard of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
Camp Islands Venture 2011 saw JROTC cadets from eight schools - three from the V.I. and five from Puerto Rico - pitting their leadership skills against each other. The purpose of Cadet Leadership Challenge is to introduce cadets to life in a military setting and to provide a safe environment for practical application of good citizenship and leadership.
Cadets from each of the eight participating schools are merged equally into two separate companies, Alpha and Bravo, and are forced to team up regardless of rank, language, gender and academic standing to form two cohesive units of platoons, squads and teams.
The annual JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge includes the following training - rappelling, water survival (drown proofing), meeting confidence course, field survival skills, land navigation, canoeing, first aid and rope bridge course.
All cadets are observed and evaluated on their individual performance during JCLC and will receive a certificate of Camp completion as well as a Certificate of Rappelling for that mandatory training requirement of scaling the rappelling tower.
Those in leadership positions at the platoon and company levels who really stand out are recognized by their Company Instructor Cadre with leadership awards accordingly.
Charlotte Amalie High School's Chickenhawks and Ivanna Eudora Kean High School's Mighty Rays dominated the Platoon Leader level with two trophies each of the six available. Central High School's Caribs took one of the two trophies at the Company Leadership level.
Twelve cadets, six from each company, in the top 20 percent of all cadets at Camp are placed on the Commandant's list. CAHS dominated that list with four trophies, followed by Central with three.
Six higher rated cadets, three from each company, are sent forward to a selection board to compete for the Honor Graduate.

Why Simon Darby is staying out of the leadership contest
Lots of blue on blue about at the moment, unfortunately we seem to have this every time there is a leadership challenge. That's not the reason I'm keeping out of this though, in the end, when this contest has finished and it will have shortly, a deal will have to be brokered and struck and we can get back to business. Somebody has to be in a position to do this. Nevertheless, plenty of people still seem to have time and respect for me (for some strange reason!), so with that in mind and anticipating the inevitable blood-letting I would like to ask one favour. Understanding that, in the circumstances, appropriate criticism of both Nick and Andrew is acceptable, can we please leave their families out of it.
