Al Cerrone: 'I'ma regular dealer for regular folks'
-->SOUTH ATTLEBORO — You know Al Cerrone from his TV ads inviting you to visit his Chevrolet Buick GMC dealership with the promise, “You’ll be glad you did!”
Cerrone spends most of his advertising budget on TV ads. His father, Al “Smokey” Cerrone, passed on the tradition when he helped him buy an Oldsmobile dealership in the mid-1970s.
“He showed me how to use TV,” he said.
Cerrone, a youthful 57, has a more casual manner than in his ads. He was wearing a Beatles T-shirt during a recent visit and said he drives a 2010 Chevrolet Aveo that gets around 30 miles to the gallon.
“I like that,” he said. “I don’t need a fancy car.”
He said he weathered the recent economic downturn by switching his sales mix to include more late-model used vehicles.
“I tell you, life was tough,” he said of 2009, which saw the bankruptcy of General Motors and the associated loss of his Cadillac franchise and closure of the Pontiac brand. “But we did not lay off one person.”
Cerrone said he started to change his mix in 2008 when gas prices soared and new car sales fell.
“They made up the shortfall and, boy, was that a shortfall with business down about 40 percent,” he said.
New car and pickup sales fell from 16.5 million in 2007 to 13.5 million in 2008 and to 10.6 in 2009 before recovering to 11.8 million last year, according to wardsauto.com. They are projected to total around 13.5 million this year.
Cerrone said his sales mix was about 800 new and 600 used in 2007. That switched to 450 new and 1,000 used in 2008.
“I was worried for me and everyone here,” he said of his 40 employees. He said the economy was “still sour,” but sales were recovering.
“We’re now focusing on new cars as used cars are difficult to get,” he said. “We’re getting toward 50-50.”
Cerrone’s grandfather Al Cerrone Sr. established a used car dealership in Providence. The family later acquired Hudson and DeSoto franchises and in 1966 his father moved the dealership to East Providence, where he sold Chryslers and Plymouths.
Cerrone, 57, attended Princeton and rowed for the school. He said he always wanted to go into the car business. He has four brothers, including Mike, a screenwriter who has worked with the Farrelly brothers (“Outside Providence,” “Me, Myself and Irene”).
