Starved pit bull recovering nicely

We have an update this morning on a story about a starved pit bull we told you about last weekend. She is now becoming quite the celebrity.

Ava is getting better everyday, and she even has her own Facebook page.

Almost 20 lbs. underweight, ava's ribs and spine were easily visible through her short black hair. While the pictures may be hard to look at, there are lots of well wishes and comments of support. Some are hoping the Facebook page will give a clue to her past.

"We were hoping we could find someone that may have recognized her, may have known who owned her, where she came from," said Melissa Smith, executive director of the York County SPCA. "Ultimately that is what we are looking for here....some justice for her [and] to be able to prosecute who did this to her."

Smith said the page was started by some concerned dog lovers who heard about her story and just wanted to spread the word to get justice for Ava.

"We need the community's support for that, because we have no idea.," she said. "But somebody knows...probably more than one person."

Last month, Ava was found in Bantz Park in York County - weighing only 27 pounds, lethargic, and unable to stand on her own. Now just a week later, she is recovering and gained two pounds.

Smith hopes that she'll be ready for adoption in three or four weeks.

"Just overnight into the first full day that we had her, she was interacting with us," Smith said. "A little tail wagging at first, and then more so as the days went on."

Ava is just one of hundreds of animals at the SPCA waiting for a new home - although, she is clearly the one in the worst shape. Smith said the kind of abuse she has had to endure could have easily been avoided.

"There is never a reason for something like this to happen," Smith said. "An animal can be taken to a shelter at anytime, or relinquished if they are no longer wanted."

abc27 spoke with the creator of Ava's page, who said they started it to give a voice to a creature that can't speak for herself. They are hoping the page will raise awareness and get people to donate to the SPCA or to their local shelters.

Smith says the Facebook page is a great place to offer well wishes and raise money -but if you know anything about ava's past or her previous owners, you should contact the SPCA.
