Jack Boyd, who has owned and operated the station for 27 years, has now removed fuel prices from his display board and placed “No More Fuel” signs on the petrol bowsers.

He can only watch as a constant stream of motorists pull in, read the signs and drive off in search of fuel elsewhere.

This has not only crippled his trade but could impact the two businesses that share the building, Kalaru Automotive and Kliptomaniac hairdressing, and the locality as a whole.

Residents and business owners say they are extremely worried about the situation.

It is believed that after Mr Boyd’s long-standing contract with Caltex expired earlier this year the company offered him a new agreement with two new demands.

Mr Boyd was required to come up with a $50,000 bond and pay for all delivered fuel in advance.

It was the first time in his history with the company that he had been asked for a bond and he was previously given three weeks to pay for the fuel.

As Caltex owns the station’s four pumps, Mr Boyd’s decision not to accept the new conditions leaves him with three options.

He could switch to an independent fuel provider and buy his own bowsers at a cost of $50,000, continue his shop trade without fuel, or close completely.

Mr Boyd didn’t want to make a comment but locals say he is devastated.

Long-term owners of Kalaru Countryside Caravan Park, Michael Mundy and Karen Jones, said their hearts went out to him.

“Jack works so hard, he’s there every day and I know that this whole thing has totally shattered him,” Mr Mundy said.

“A lot of people around here are very upset about it, both because they feel for him and because it would be a big loss for the community if the station disappears.

“I don’t know how many times a week I go up there for different things.

“It’s not just the fuel but he has groceries, newspapers and runs the post office from there too, so it really is a bit of a hub.”

Ms Jones said the lack of fuel services would affect tourists over summer.

“An awful lot of people staying with us get their bait and fill up their boats at Jack’s,” Ms Jones said.

“I suppose we are in competition in a way because we do stock a lot of the same things but it’s never felt like that, and the last thing you want is to see your neighbour go under.
