1910 Federal Census
Redemption's bloody path to Restoration and exodus
Post-Civil War Reconstruction in South Carolina ended in 1877, with the withdrawal of federal troops and the election of former Confederate Gen. Wade Hampton III as governor. What followed was a period called, by whites, “Restoration” or “Redemption,” marked by paternalistic segregation. However, the rise of Edgefield’s Benjamin Ryan “Pitchfork Ben” Tillman, elected governor a little over a decade later, marked the end of Hampton’s moderate brand of segregation. Five years later, the state adopted a new constitution, stripping blacks of their rights. Killer hurricanes and the boll weevil stripped blacks of much of their economic opportunity as well. By 1960, almost 1 million African Americans had left the state.
July 4-8, 1876 – Seven people – six blacks and a white – are killed during the Hamburg Massacre in Aiken County, as whites and black militia clash. The massacre is a signature moment in the re-establishment of whites-only rule. Edgefield’s Ben Tillman , who later becomes governor and U.S. senator, is present, a fact he touts during his political rise.
Brenda Baratto of the Heritage Council of North Augusta stands in the Hamburg Massacre section of the Aiken County Historical Museum next to an historical marker that will take it's place on the property formally known as Hamburg near where the massacre occurred. Residence of Aiken and North Augusta work hard to raise awareness about the Hamburg Massacre that occurred in 1876 and resulted in the death of seven men. The Hamburg Massacre played a pivotal rule in the start of South Carolina Reconstruction leading to 'Jim Crow' laws in the south.

Sept. 6, 1876 – Mob violence in Charleston claims the life of a white person. The violence – in Hamburg and Charleston – is seen by many whites as proof that Republican Gov. Daniel Chamberlain can’t maintain law and order.
Sept. 15-20, 1876 – Whites execute an estimated 40 blacks after riots in Ellenton , including state Rep. Simon P. Coker of Barnwell County.
Oct. 16, 1876 – White Democrats and black Republicans fight in Cainhoy . Six whites and a black are killed.
