Miller playing for love of the game

TOPEKA — There is a driving force behind LaKaito Barr-Miller’s sprint to the end zone at Landon Arena — he loves to play football.

By day, he works at Genesis Health Club in Emporia, but come Saturday evenings, Barr-Miller is one of the boys who loves to compete under the bright lights for the Kansas Koyotes of the American Professional Football League.

Screaming from the top of her lungs, echoing throughout the arena, is his mother and biggest fan, Pam.

LaKaito, a 2002 graduate of Paola High School, just finished his second season with the Koyotes.

He was on television in Topeka, scoring on a touchdown in the season opener against the Iowa Blackhawks in April.

“I love it,” LaKaito said. “Just to be able to play a game that I have a passion for. It is a great opportunity for me to move on.

“Of course, everyone dreams of the NFL,” he said. “Statistically, that is just not going to happen. For me right now, this is my NFL.”

He has been moving on up since he left the Paola Panthers.

LaKaito played two years at Fort Scott Community College and transferred to Emporia State University. An injury in spring ball prevented him from playing that season. The following year he went to St. Mary’s College in Leavenworth and played for the Spiers.

He began playing semiprofessional football in 2008, when he was running back for the Missouri Mustangs.

Since then, he has gotten to know just about every inch of the football field.

“I have played literally every position, except for kicker,” LaKaito said. “I have played running back, quarterback, offensive line and defensive line.”

LaKaito recently became a father. He and Brandi Fisher welcomed a son, Boston Malakai, into the world at 6:30 a.m. June 30.

“It is definitely life changing,” he said. “Being a dad is good, I like it.”

LaKaito and the Kansas Koyotes advanced to the playoffs this season. He has no intentions of slowing down any time soon.

“It is just great to be able to be on the field and play,” he said. “I love playing the game, especially in front of family.”

He had a fan club, bringing the biggest fan he ever had with him to every game, dating back to his middle school days in Paola.

“Mom — the voice — is always screaming big time,” he said.

To score the first touchdown of the season and see it on the news that night, it was a thrill, he said.
