Women's Lacrosse: 'Unique summer' for former Falcon McMunn

Erin McMunn is in the midst of what she's calling "a pretty unique summer."

On May 25, McMunn helped Winters Mill's girls lacrosse team win its second consecutive state championship. Two weeks later, she graduated and enjoyed some time at the beach with friends. Soon she'll be getting ready to attend Princeton University and play for the Tigers' women's lacrosse team.

But McMunn has something else on her schedule before college - at the end of the month she leaves for Hannover, Germany, site of the Federation of International Lacrosse World Championships, as a member of the U.S. under-19 national team.

McMunn is one of 18 players on Team USA, which finalized its roster in February after a series of grueling tryouts that began last summer. The world championships are set for Aug. 3-13 and the U.S. team has won the past three titles.

She said she feels fortunate to be on the squad and she's excited to be making her first trip overseas, but McMunn should really thank her mom, Gretchin, and WM coach Courtney Vaughn for their persistence.

McMunn, 17, was at a tryout last summer for a regional tournament team and recalled reading a line at the bottom of a form. If she checked a box on the paper, she'd be evaluated for a tryout spot for the U.S. U-19 team.

"I was like, ‘Nah, that's all right. That wouldn't end up happening anyway,'" McMunn said. "Plus it was 20 extra bucks. I could buy a lot of stuff for 20 bucks."

McMunn listened to her mom and high school coach, however, completed the form and forked over the $20. From there she went to UMBC for the first three days of tryouts, one of 165 girls from 25 different states trying to make the team.

The list was narrowed throughout the year and McMunn survived through the 24-player training team. In late January, Team USA competed in a tourney in Florida and six more cuts were made. McMunn came home and waited for either a phone call or an email within a three-hour window. The call meant she got cut; the message meant she was headed to Germany.

"I was staring at my [cell] phone the whole time," McMunn said. "The house phone went off a couple times ... It was so nerve-wracking."

With 30 minutes to spare, she summoned enough courage to check her inbox and saw something from U.S. Lacrosse national teams program director Nathaniel Badder.

Since then, McMunn said her excitement level has been growing.

"As you start to go and play in the little tournaments, it starts to set in a little more," she said. "Now we have our tickets, and luggage to pack our things in, and the rest of our gear. It's really here and it's really going to happen.

List of UK counties in Big Commerce is incorrect

The list of counties for the UK in Big Commerce is incorrect. In fact, there is no official list of counties for the UK because the post office no longer use county as a mandatory part of the postal address. Counties change constantly due to changes in political boundaries. The list of UK counties on Big Commerce appears to be derived from a site which is campaigning for the reinstatement of county boundaries for the last century which is a laudable aim but means that the county list is meaningless to many people (particularly those under 30 in the UK). Some of the counties on the list such as the Ridings of Yorkshire haven't been used for years and there are some missing. Anyone placing an order who lives in Middlesbrough for example doesn't have an appropriate county to select. If they are over 40 they may remember the time that Middlesbrough used to be in North Yorkshire so may select that. Younger people will be completely stumped. I did raise this last year with BC but was told to raise as a feature request. I rather resent doing this to be honest. If the list of US states was incorrect you can bet they would change it! Given that counties are no longer part official UK postal addresses the most sensible option would be to make this field optional if people select UK as the country. Any other UK customers out there who will back me up on this.
