4 Questions With Paula Patton at ABFF

What's happened to black film since the heyday of the 1990s?

Paula Patton: Here's the thing: We have a placehold in Hollywood where some African-American films are being made -- but not nearly enough. And when you look at other ethnic groups in America, they don't have any cinematic presence in Hollywood -- whether it is Asian or Latin -- but we do. We need to continue to drive it forward, and we need to lean on each other and really find support in each other. We need to make more and better-quality films that we can all be proud of.

I have to say I am a tad disappointed Beyonce will be playing a singer again—clearly, the only character she feels confident portraying, but I digress… The film will be the fourth remake of the classic story – the most recent version in 1976 starred Barbara Streisand as an aspiring singer who falls for an older rock star (Kris Kristofferson), but Judy Garland and Janet Gaynor have previously played the lead role. Film projects, helmed by Hollywood’s elite like Eastwood and DiCaprio put Beyonce straight on the path to the Oscar covets. Are you looking forward to spending $10 to see  ‘A Star Is Born’ or did ‘Obsessed’ seal your opinions on Beyonce’s rumored “acting” ability? Congrats all the same!

”I represent this generation’s talent and for me to be the chosen person, as an African American woman, is incredible.” Could not agree more and I’m glad SHE said it, she knows she’s the cream of the crop and she said so without being cocky or coming off as stuck up. Still genuine as she can be.

Good for her, and I’m sure Clint is going to go all in with the direction w/Beyonce and your right, THIS will clearly put her on that Oscar path even if she doesn’t win it, but Clint is a seasoned pro and he’s going to make sure she puts in work and she’s up for the challenge seeing as though she’s a hard worker despite if ppl discredit her acting ability she puts 200% in ALL she does so I have faith in her. She’s def killing it!

yeah she will be playing a singer again, but no one says no to Clint Eastwood. He’s a master at his craft.

And c’mon Beyonce is not as bad as people think… I actually liked her in Dreamgirls, she did her part very well. Obssessed I did not watch, but I doubt it has any potential of giving ANY actress a role to be recognized/critically acclaimed with…

I think she will do good in this movie. She has the will, the hard-working ethic and all the right people around her so that she can achieve, at least, an Oscar Nomination.

Im trying to figure out who would turn down an opportunity to star in a movie which is being directed by Clint Eastwood. I dont think none of you hating ass hoes would turn anything like that down. And who cares that beyonce is doing another singing role. So glad that the internet and things like that weren’t around when the great Judy Garland, Julie Andrews, and Barbra Streisand where doing their non stop musicals. Because people would just not get over the fact that they simply love doing and being in musicals where they get to both show their singing and acting ability.
