YMCA Expanding in Lafayette

Lafayette, Indiana – With Zumba instructors leading the crowd in calorie-burning dance fitness steps to the tune of high-energy Latin music, the Lafayette Family YMCA announced Thursday that it will open a second site locally and hire another 12 employees.
The new facility, to be known as the YMCA Downtown Center, is tentatively set to open in mid-September. It will occupy 7,550 square feet on the lower level of Renaissance Place, a multi-story office building at 250 Main St.
“This is a first for the Lafayette Family YMCA, two locations in Lafayette,” said executive director Paul Cramer. “A dozen new employees will increase our local staff to a total of 150.”
“The new facility will include locker rooms, showers, exercise equipment and space for group classes,” said Mike Stapleton, president of local YMCA board of directors. “Lafayette is growing. Y membership is growing. It’s time for the Y facilities to grow.
We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. That’s why, at the Y, strengthening community is our cause,” Stapleton said. “We’re calling this expansion mode ‘Two Ys, One Cause: Strengthening Community.’”
Fellow board member Scott Rumble noted the wide range of exercise equipment the facility will feature. “You’ll be able to get a good workout and improve your health at this spacious new facility. It will be equipped with 14 free-weight stations, 14 CYBEX Selectorized weight-lifting machines and 18 state-of-the-art cardio machines. Even better, it’s a YMCA facility and YMCA staff. It’s a new place, with a familiar face.”
Zumba, led Thursday by instructors Tabitha Gullett, Kristin Smith and Brian Virtue, is just one of the group classes that will be offered, said board member Cindy Murray.
“Members can expect a full lineup of classes at different activity levels that will get them moving and keep them moving,” Murray said. “Classes, scheduled at a variety of times to meet the needs of members, will also include Body Pump, CX30 high-intensity exercise for enhanced muscle and strength development, and RPM, the reciprocal power method.”
The facility also will offer a child-watch service. Hours of the YMCA Downtown Center will be weekdays from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturdays, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sundays, 1 to 6 p.m.
It will be open to all YMCA members, with a variety of membership levels available, including college rates and corporate memberships.

DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — Dover-Foxcroft selectmen and the Piscataquis Regional YMCA will host a joint forum at 6:30 p.m. July 12 at Center Theatre to learn more about what the public would like the YMCA to offer in the future.
During the annual town meeting referendum in June, residents voted down the traditional $32,000 donation to the YMCA, so the YMCA is having to adjust internally and move forward, according to executive director Erika Weidner. “Times are tough and we have to adapt,” she said Thursday.
“There’s never been a contract per se for what we were supposed to offer,” Weidner said. She called the town’s donation more of a subsidy and said it helped cover most of the youth sports and swimming.
Dover-Foxcroft Town Manager Jack Clukey said selectmen, who met Monday, are very interested in the YMCA’s offerings. He said the YMCA is making final plans on what it will and won’t offer and wants the public to comment.
“It’s just kind of a way to get public input on what people would like to see available going forward,” he said of the forum.
In addition to the discussion about the YMCA, selectmen on Monday awarded a snowplow contract to Dean Rideout of Dover-Foxcroft. The three-year contract for the south side of town, or 25½ miles, will cost a total of $174,814. Rideout’s bid was not the lowest of the four submitted. Joe Flint of Sebec bid $168,115 for the three years. With the small difference in bids, Clukey said the selectmen wanted to keep the bid local. He said town officials have been happy with Rideout’s plowing over the past 10 years.
