On a late June evening, a batter on the Watchung Hills Warriors 13-year-old travel team hits a ball out of play. The Warren Township Municipal Complex contains six fields — this stray ball lands in the middle of a softball game.
“Hey, look!” the Warriors’ Tyler Lombardo shouts from the field’s makeshift dugout. “Those girls are playing baseball now!” Amanda Grieco is excelling at something few 13-year-old girls do - baseball. In fact, she is just one of a handful of girls across the country play little league with the boys. The short stop, third baseman and pitcher for the Watchung Hills Warriors has been nicknamed "Little Mo" after Yankees closer Mariano Rivera. Last year, she struck out 67 batters in just 32 innings. He forgets, for a brief moment, that a few feet away there is a girl he has played baseball with for parts of six seasons.
Amanda Grieco, a 13-year-old from Millington, is peering through the fence, watching her team bat during a district semifinal game. A little more than seven years ago, she veered off the normal path and decided on baseball instead of softball.
Amanda is a triplet — her sister Kelly plays softball, and her brother George didn’t get selected to the Warriors. She is the only girl on the Warriors, playing third base and serving as the team’s closer.
“I think I can strike out anybody or play with anybody,” Amanda said. “I’m not intimidated by anyone.”
She remains the only girl in her league and district. Starting a week from today, she will likely be the only girl participating in the state tournament for 13-year-olds — she is the only girl her coach, Bob Roth, and opposing coaches remember seeing on a baseball diamond in at least four years. She is also a member of the Dream Team, a national elite 13-year-old all-girls team that competes with top all-boys teams. She will participate in the state tournament until July 18, when she will travel to Colorado with the Dream Team to take part in the United States Speciality Sports Association World Series from July 20-24.
And she wants to keep playing — throughout high school, and until she is told she cannot continue. The question remains, of course, as to how long will pass before that day comes. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, 71 girls in New Jersey played high school baseball in 2010 — compared with nearly 15,000 boys.
