Historic home saved from fiery fate
The Seymour Volunteer Fire Department was planning to burn a home in South Knox County as a part of a fire training exercise.
However, they found out the home is a pre-civil war home. Knox Heritage determined the home was originally built in 1836 by the family who ran the Huffaker Ferry on the French Broad River.
They want to work with the property owner to find a way to save the hosue because of it's place in history. "The descendants of that family may have, you know, been an aviation pioneer. We're researching that.
He might have worked with the Wright brothers and so it really holds a lot of history. Plus it's just very rare, We don't have very many of them left," said Knox Heritage Executive Director Kim Trent.
The SVFD is looking for another property to conduct their live fire training event. Researchers will continue to study the historic home.
